One Leg, Two Legs, or All Four Legs #134

Every country has its quirks and oddities. Albania is no different. One can see Burger King restaurants and there even is a KFC in the airport. But MacDonald’s apparently not allowed. Also, they are a very heavy coffee drinking nation. But one cannot get regular drip coffee. It has to be an Americano or latte or for most people, an espresso. I’m not sure of the reason, but Starbucks doesn’t have any presence in Tirana or the other cities we visited.

But they do have statues. From what I understand, the only statue, or at least one of the few, that is dedicated to an idea is The Statue of Liberty. All other statues are in recognition of a person or group of people. Usually statues are of political leaders, but many military leaders have statues too. Most of the military leaders are depicted riding a horse and brandishing a weapon of some kind. Albania’s national hero, Skanderberg, is depicted riding his horse in Skanderbeg Square in Tirana, the capitol city.

However, there is an answer key that is understood by statue makers that was news to me. If all four legs of the horse were on the ground, the rider died of natural causes. If the leader is on a horse that has one leg in the air, it means that he died from wounds suffered in battle. If the horse has two legs in the air, the rider died in battle.
