Who Remembers Pet Rocks? #145

There was a time when novelty things like songs or toys or some product were fairly common. It seemed that we wanted a distraction from the everyday and a new fad would come along and help us take our minds off the current worries. I kind of think we need that today. Luckily, Gary Dahl came along.

He had an idea that was inspired by friends who complain about the work they have to put in with their dogs or cats. Feeding, walking, bathing, veterinarian appointments, expensive food…it’s all too much. So he creates an invention that sells one and one-half million.

Those of a certain age will remember Pet Rocks. The concept behind it was remarkably simple. He would gather rocks, package them individually, and sell them. I never knew if it was as a joke or if he was serious about things, but it was a distraction and I’m sure many were amused. At least enough to buy, probably as a present, a joke gift.

There’s a lot to be outraged about, but that's no way to live. Rather, we should take a lesson from Mr. Dahl and maybe laugh at the absurdity of things. And then take action.
