The Dude Bowls?

The Shawshank Redemption, a great movie with a horrible title, was not commercially successful at first, but it grew to be one of the most popular and critically acclaimed movies. It just doesn't have quotable lines like The Godfather or The Big Lebowski. There is the “Get busy livin’ or get busy dying” line, but not much in terms of iconic lines like Michael’s, “It’s nothing personal. It’s strictly business.” But I think the movie that has the most quotable lines comes from The Dude. I’m the Dude. so that’s what you call me. That or His Dudeness, Duder, or El Dudarino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing. 

We come into movies with assumptions and expectations. There is a formula to Westerns, prison movies, gangster, etc. We generally know what to expect, the general plot twists, and where things are going. As humans we like routines and predictability so when something happens unexpectedly, it can be a bit of a jolt. But sometimes things that don’t happen can be equally surprising. 

It can be said that The Big Lebowski is a sports movie because so much of it takes place in a bowling alley. But there is only one character, Donny, who is seen bowling. And while the Dude abides, he isn’t seen bowling.
