Trust and Faith

An old joke about trust goes like this: A man stumbles and falls down a very deep well. He luckily grabs onto a branch to stop his fall, but his grip is weakening and he looks up and calls out, “Is there anyone up there?” He sees a circle of light, the clouds part, and he hears, “I am the Lord, let go of the branch and I will save you.” The man thinks for a moment and then calls out, “Is there anyone else up there?”

I’m not sure what this says about humans, God, faith, or what. However, it does make the point that letting go is difficult. In the Age of the Heart we have to be willing to let go of a lot of things: grudges, pre-conceived ideas that are tailor made to fit our narrative, the old ways of doing things. In this new age we have to be able to embrace uncertainty and ambiguity while still holding on to our values. We have to trust ourselves knowing that working with our brains is important, but working with our heart (love, tolerance, respect, empathy) is more important.
